The story of Queen, one of the most prominent rock bands ever, began in 1971. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor used to play in Smile, in the beginning, and then started their own project with Freddie Mercury on vocals. In early 1971, they were joined by bassist John Deacon and completed the lineup formation. In late 1972, Queen signed a contract with EMI Records and gave their first performance at the Marquee club in London the following spring.
After the unsuccessful single Keep Yourself Alive, in 1973 they released the first album named Queen, a noticeable combination of 70's glam rock and late 60's hard rock. Having toured long, they recorded the second album, Queen II, which saw them enter the British Top 5. The single Killer Queen was the first record by the band to have acclaim in the United States. By that time, Freddie Mercury had already been regarded one of the leading rock singers. In 1975, Queen experienced a grand breakthrough. On touring the Far East, the musicians escaped to the studio to record the masterpiece, Bohemian Rhapsody. They made a stunning song, which kept the number one position in the British charts for nine weeks.
The accompanying album, A Night At The Opera (1975), became a bestseller and led the English charts while remaining in the top 5 of the USA. This CD symbolized the rock music of 70's. It was a tuneful album with wide application of piano and started a new epoch in the history of the genre. A Day At The Races (1976) roused the critical indignation. They blamed the musicians for self-copying. May justified it by simultaneous writing the material for the two albums.
After that, Queen started to modify their music making it more aggressive and drawing it closer to hard rock. Jazz, released in 1978, turned out the most controversial album in the band's discography.

In the States, they prohibited the video for one its songs, while the tracks differed greatly by their style, which made it hard to comprehend the CD as a music unity. In the early 1980's, Queen finished the creation of their own style. It was demonstrated on the 1980 release, The Game. Utilization of synthesizers, this album was loaded with, was a revolutionary move, as it had seemed inadmissible for such kind of music before. Mercury himself named it the band's best work ever done. After releasing several solo albums by the members of the band, Queen made a glorious comeback with the satirical track Radio Gaga and the song I Want To Break Free, promoted by another scandalous video.
In the late 80's, Queen reduced their studio activity and produced new albums rarely. Yet it never affected their popularity, which was brilliantly proved by Innuendo (1991), another English chart-topper from Queen.
The main hit on the record was the genius The Show Must Go On. This songs had a special value and profound meaning, taking into consideration the sorrowful conditions caused by Freddie's fatal illness.
The concerts by Queen were always a blazonry, primarily, thanks to Mercury's charismatic personality and May's masterly guitar work. Freddie Mercury’s death of AIDS (November 24, 1991) seemed to put an end to Queen’s career. However, the band carried on and went touring with Paul Rogers. John Deacon refused to come back as her did not support this idea. After a streak of striking performance under the Return of the Champions program, this union, Queen & Paul Rogers, announced the plans to produce a new album. The Cosmos Rocks has been released in September 2008.

Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen’s music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey. For years, their albums boasted the motto “no synthesizers were used on this record,” signaling their allegiance with the legions of post-Led Zeppelin hard rock bands. But vocalist Freddie Mercury brought an extravagant sense of camp to Queen, pushing them toward kitschy humor and pseudo-classical arrangements, as epitomized on their best-known song, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Mercury, it must be said, was a flamboyant bisexual who managed to keep his sexuality in the closet until his death from AIDS in 1991. Through his legendary theatrical performances, Queen became one of the most popular bands in the world in the mid-’70s; in England, they remained second only to the Beatles in popularity and collectibility in the ’90s.
Despite their enormous popularity, Queen were never taken seriously by rock critics — an infamous Rolling Stone review labeled their 1979 album Jazz as “fascist.” In spite of such harsh criticism, the band’s popularity rarely waned; even in the late ’80s, the group retained a fanatical following except in America. In the States, their popularity peaked in the early ’80s, just as they finished nearly a decade’s worth of extraordinarily popular records.
And while those records were never praised, they sold in enormous numbers, and traces of Queen’s music could be heard in several generations of hard rock and metal bands in the next two decades, from Metallica to Smashing Pumpkins. This is going to take a little explaining. In 1981, when it was contracted to Elektra Records in the U.S., released an album called (Elektra 564), which contained 14 songs that chronicled singles from 1973 to 1981.
In 1990, Hollywood Records acquired CD rights to 's catalog, by which time the Elektra had gone out of print on vinyl. Hollywood released, a compilation that covered 's hits from 1982 to its demise in 1991, with a few older songs thrown in. Then it released this album, its version of, which is a 17-track album that deletes the songs from the first that appeared on (among them 's biggest hit, 'Bohemian Rhapsody') and adds a few tracks from the 1973-1982 era that did not appear on the original release. The Elektra LP had a superior selection, but it's gone now, so you're stuck with this. (New fans don't seem to have minded, as this new sold better than the first one.).
2011 Universal Remaster Professional ratings Review scores Source Rating B+ Greatest Hits is a by the British rock band, released in the UK on 26 October 1981. The album consisted of Queen's best-selling singles since their first chart appearance in 1974 with ', up to their 1980 hit ' (though in some countries ', the band's 1981 chart-topper with, was included). There was no universal track listing or cover art for the album, and each territory's tracks were dependent on what singles had been released there and which were successful. Queen's Greatest Hits was an instant success, peaking at number one on the for four weeks. It has spent 800 weeks in the UK Charts, and is the of all time in the UK, selling over six million copies.
It is certified eight times platinum in the United States, and is Queen's most commercially successful album worldwide with over 25 million copies sold, making it one of the. Guitarist hailed the UK edition of Greatest Hits as 'impeccable' and 'absolutely genius', while British journalist called it the greatest album of all time. Contents. History There was no universal track listing or cover art for the Greatest Hits album, and each territory's tracks were dependent on what singles were released there and what tracks charted. In some cases, despite the band's popularity, not enough songs were issued as singles to fill a compilation album, and a few album tracks were used as filler.
Some examples of these were ' and ', neither was released as a single in any country, but appear on some regions' 1981 Hits release. In the UK and the US, where solid numbers could be collected, the standard was raised again by only including top 20 hits. The US ended up with its original edit of Queen's first single release, ', which had been re-released in the US in 1975 (original release was 1973) after the success of '. Also, because of the delay in release dates between the UK (out first) and the US (almost a month later), the US was able to add ' (Queen's duet with David Bowie) to its Hits collection, as it was released during that interim. In Argentina and Brazil, the LP edition included the same list of UK Greatest Hits minus ', and including 'Love of My Life' ( version). CD version is the same as the British. The cover photo that appeared on the UK and US release was taken by at his home studio using only natural light.
For the 1981 release the photo was skewed but later presented as it was originally taken for the 2011 re-release. In 1991, Queen sought to issue a collection worldwide, this time with a standard track listing. However, the band had just changed record labels in the US, from Capitol to, who were keen on a massive promotion of the band's back catalogue. The problem was that Elektra still held the US rights to that first 1981 collection (despite being Hollywood's US licensee). Hollywood Records decided to not release Greatest Hits II to the US market, but instead created their own collection, (1992), peaking at no. This compilation was made up of tracks such as 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Keep Yourself Alive' and 'Under Pressure' (which had already appeared on the Elektra 1981 Hits collection) as well as newer tracks (' and ').
Some tracks were not even singles in the US (') or anywhere ('). Though well received, this collection would eventually pose the problem of overlapping track lists in the future. Hollywood Records, later that year, re-released a companion collection Greatest Hits with similar artwork (on a red background, where Classic Queen was on royal blue). Commonly referred to as the Red Greatest Hits, it features most of the '70s tracks absent from Classic Queen (including 'Another One Bites the Dust' 1980, 'We Will Rock You', 'We Are the Champions' and 'Killer Queen'). In 2004, to promote the Las Vegas production of the musical We Will Rock You, Hollywood Records released Greatest Hits: We Will Rock You Edition which was the UK Greatest Hits with three bonus tracks.
Commercial performance By 2006, 25 years after its first release, Greatest Hits had become the best-selling album in the UK and the first album to sell more than five million copies there.
